Important steps facilitating electromobility in Germany

With two government decisions, the ground has been prepared for further promotion and growth of electromobility in Germany.

Firstly, the Bundestag has passed the Building Electromobility Infrastructure Act (GEIG). This law is intended to provide clear guidelines for an expansion of the electromobility charging infrastructure in the building sector. In the case of new buildings and major renovations, for example, residential buildings will have to be equipped with a certain number of empty conduits in the future so that the installation of wallboxes will be easier.

Secondly, the Federal Cabinet has passed a draft law for a nationwide provision of fast charging infrastructure. The aim is to build a public fast-charging network with 1,000 locations and at least 150 kW of charging capacity by 2023. According to the federal government, less than two percent of all charging points currently have a charging capacity of at least 100 kW. The call for tenders is expected to be in 10 to 15 lots across Europe.
